RAW Format Description
A proprietary format used in digital cameras, RAW preserves all the pixel information captured by the camera's sensors. This format allows photographers to have full control and flexibility over their images, enabling them to achieve the best possible results. Unlike formats like JPEG or TIFF, RAW files contain unprocessed sensor data, ensuring that the original information remains uncompressed and unaltered.
In the realm of digital photography, there exists a multitude of exclusive RAW formats. However, with the exception of Adobe's DNG, most widely-used image editing applications are unable to identify these formats. As a result, camera manufacturers offer their own dedicated software to facilitate the editing, importing, and conversion of their proprietary formats. This includes modifying attributes like hue, saturation, white balance, contrast, and even exposure for optimal results. The RAW format provides a higher color depth of 12 bits or more, allowing changes to be made to the complete range of colors before they are eventually reduced to 8 bits in formats such as JPEGs and TIFFs.
RAW files, also known as "digital negatives," have the advantage of being easily converted to other formats. Similar to traditional film negatives, the original RAW file can be utilized multiple times to produce different photographs, each with unique adjustments. The only notable drawback of RAW photography is the time required for post-processing.
