DCM Format Description
A DCM file refers to a type of image file that is specifically saved using the Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine (DICOM) image format. This file format is commonly used to store various medical images, including CT scans and ultrasounds. Additionally, it has the capability to include relevant patient information, which allows for effective pairing of the image with the corresponding patient data.
The DICOM format was developed by the National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA). In 1983, NEMA introduced the first version of the standard, which underwent multiple revisions throughout the 1990s and 2000s.
The utilization of this format has established itself as a widely recognized and accepted method for the storage, transmission, visualization, processing, and printing of medical images in various healthcare settings. This includes critical imaging modalities like MRIs, CT scans, and ultrasound images. Moreover, healthcare professionals frequently exchange these invaluable images with colleagues and patients by means of CDs or email.
Important: DCM files can also be saved in .DICOM format.
